It was a packed stretch for the Falcons, three games in four days that tested everything from endurance to attitude, and maybe even how much bus laughter a team can physically handle.
Things got rolling Wednesday night at Ed Burke Field against a strong Santa Margarita Catholic High School squad. The Falcons ran into a tough opponent and fell 17 to 6, but the scoreboard did not tell the full story. Down big heading into the fourth, JV coach Alana brought the energy, firing up the sideline and keeping spirits high when it would have been easy to check out.
Senior captain Cathy Tonelli led by example, going 4 for 5 on the night and controlling six draws like she had a magnet in her stick. Sophomore Lauren Brockman added some flair with a highlight reel worthy twizzler goal plus an assist. It was not the result they wanted, but the energy never dipped, and sometimes that says more about a team than the final score ever could. JV had the night off, probably saving their legs for what was coming next.
Thursday flipped the script in a big way as both squads traveled to Patrick Henry High School to take on the Patriots. The JV squad wasted no time, putting together a dominant 14 to 2 win. This is a group that is clearly learning, adjusting, and improving week by week, and it is starting to show in a big way.
Varsity followed that up with a statement of their own, taking down the Patriots 17 to 8. The offense was clicking, the defense was locked in, and the contributions came from everywhere. A special moment came from senior #6 Grace Livingston, who buried her first goal of the season and got a well deserved celebration from the sideline. Defensively, the Falcons forced five turnovers and controlled the pace all night. The bus ride home? Loud, happy, and fun!
After a quick turnaround, Varsity was right back at Ed Burke Field on Saturday afternoon to face New Trier High School, who made the trip in from Illinois. This one had all the makings of a battle. The Trevians jumped out to a 5 to 1 lead early, but the Falcons refused to fold. The middle quarters turned into a gritty back and forth, with Torrey Pines clawing their way back within striking distance.
Then came the turning point. Yellow cards stacked up late, leaving the Falcons down a player for the final six minutes. Against a team like New Trier, that is a tough hill to climb. Despite the effort, the Falcons came up short 19 to 14. It was not pretty, it was not easy, but it was all heart. The kind of game where you walk off exhausted, knowing you gave everything you had.
Now the Falcons get a chance to reset. Both squads will be back in action next Friday against the Carlsbad Lancers. With six games left and four of them carrying major Avocado League implications, every possession starts to matter a little more.
Senior night is set for April 27, CIF playoffs are right around the corner in early May, and the runway is getting shorter. The season may be winding down, but this team is doing the opposite. They are tightening up, locking in, and getting ready to make their push when it counts most.
