The Falcons welcomed the Galena Grizzlies from Reno, Nevada to San Diego for a full slate at Ed Burke Stadium, and the night delivered everything from heartbreak to dominance.
The JV squad found themselves in a battle from the opening draw. After clawing their way back, the Falcons tied the game at 8 to 8 in the fourth quarter, showing real resilience. The Grizzlies managed to score the go ahead goal with just over a minute remaining. Despite a final push, the Falcons could not find the equalizer and fell just short in a hard fought contest.
Freshman standout #13 Isobel Brewer had an incredible performance, leading all scorers with 6 goals on 7 shots. Sophomore Kenzie Zunk added 2 goals on 2 shots and continues to be a steady contributor. The effort was there across the board, this one just did not bounce their way.
The Varsity team had a different response.
After dropping three straight games, the Falcons came out with urgency and never let up, earning a commanding 24 to 12 win. The offense was clicking all night, led by #4 Reese Rohrbach with 6 goals, #10 Cathy Tonelli with 5, and #22 Avery Stone with a perfect 5 for 5 shooting performance. Contributions came from everywhere, with #1 Kathrine Janis scoring 3, #2 Molly Ogden and #5 Kyllie Clark each adding 2, and #9 Jordan Jackson adding another.
The defensive effort stood out just as much. The Falcons outworked the Grizzlies on ground balls, forced turnovers, and controlled possession throughout the game. The draw unit set the tone early and often, finishing with 24 draw controls. Rookie goalie #50 Siena Loftsgard stepped in and contributed 2 saves in front of the net.
This was a complete team win with energy, execution, and contributions from everyone on the field!
With both JV and Varsity sitting at 4-5 at the midway point of the season, the Falcons now turn their focus to Rancho Santa Margarita on April 8th. If this performance is any indication, the tide may be starting to turn at just the right time.
