More Than a Game: Falcons Show Strength in Unity

More Than a Game: Falcons Show Strength in Unity

In a week that began with a close and hard-fought loss to Foothill, the Torrey Pines Varsity girls lacrosse team returned home to face another formidable opponent—Wellesley High School, who made the long journey from Wellesley, Massachusetts. Known for their tenacity and precision, the East Coast powerhouse brought their A-game, ultimately handing the Falcons a 17-7 loss.

But when the final whistle blew, it was clear: this night wasn’t about the scoreboard.

Before the game, the Falcons paused to honor the memory of one of their teammate’s fathers, who recently passed away unexpectedly. With both Varsity and JV players standing shoulder to shoulder, and family members filling the stands, the Torrey Pines lacrosse community came together in the truest sense of the word.

The ceremony was a poignant reminder that while lacrosse may be the common thread that binds this team, it’s love, empathy, and support that truly make it a family.

Through the tears and the tributes, the Falcons showed what it means to stand united—not just as teammates, but as people who care deeply for one another. On a field normally defined by competition, it was compassion that defined the night.

And just two days later, that fire, that bond, and that fight showed up big under the Thursday night lights.

Traveling to take on rival La Costa Canyon, the Varsity Falcons channeled every ounce of emotion into a gritty, defensive battle against the Mavericks. With resilience and heart on full display, Torrey Pines edged out a 7-6 victory—a hard-earned, much-needed win that lifted spirits and reminded everyone what this team is capable of. Now sitting at 6-11 with two games remaining, the Falcons are poised to finish strong.

Meanwhile, the JV squad also had redemption on the brain, squaring off against LCC for the second time this season. After a tight first half, the Falcons fell just short, dropping a 9-7 decision. Despite the loss, there were standout efforts from attacker Lauren Brockman, who broke through the Maverick defense with sharp shooting, and midfielder Marina Geringer, who hustled hard on both ends of the field. At 10-3, the JV team still holds an impressive record with two games to go—next up, Poway under the lights at Ed Burke Stadium.

As the season winds down, one thing remains crystal clear: this program is built on more than wins and losses. It’s built on character, on connection, and on showing up for one another—on and off the field.
