JV Edges Coronado in Friday Night Thriller

The road tested the Torrey Pines girls lacrosse teams this week, starting with a midweek trip north to Manhattan Beach to face an undefeated Mira Costa squad. Both Varsity and JV knew they were walking into a tough matchup, but the Falcons showed plenty of fight.

The Varsity team battled hard and put together a strong performance against Mira Costa, keeping the game competitive throughout. A late comeback push had the Mustangs on their heels, but the rally came up just short as Torrey Pines fell 9–12. The game showed flashes of the team’s potential—speed in transition, aggressive defense, and moments where the offense clicked—but consistency remains the key the Falcons are still working to unlock.

The JV team also took on Mira Costa earlier in the day, falling 5–11. It wasn’t the result they hoped for, and it made for a long bus ride home, but the Falcons stuck together. Players from both teams supported each other, keeping spirits up and focusing on the opportunity ahead.

There wasn’t much time to dwell on the losses. After one quick practice, both teams were back on the field Friday night under the lights at Ed Burke Stadium against Coronado High School.

Varsity came out with energy and determination, but the Islanders—last year’s CIF champions—proved to be a formidable opponent. Coronado built a strong first-half lead that ultimately proved too much to overcome, and the Falcons dropped their second straight game, 3–23. The disappointment was visible on the field after the final whistle, but so was the resolve. Losses like this sting, but they also sharpen focus and fuel the drive to improve.

The bright spot of the night came from the JV squad, who delivered one of the most exciting games of the young season. In a back-and-forth battle that kept fans on the edge of their seats, the Falcons edged out Coronado 9–8 in a thrilling victory. The JV team is beginning to find its rhythm, playing more cohesively and confidently with each game. The early-season jitters are fading, and the chemistry on the field is clearly building.

Next up, the Falcons face Scripps Ranch High School on March 9. There’s not much time to rest, but both teams know they have the resilience and determination to keep pushing forward.

Sometimes the most important wins come from the lessons learned along the way—and the Falcons are already putting those lessons to work.
